Dodging and turning at high speed through every back alley and road he knew, Rayne clinging on behind him, Rafe tore out of the city, raced down the coast road, then pulled up in front of Stanfield's mansion. He swung off his bike and tried to compose himself. At least Rainie had some experience riding on the back of a big bike – Cooper had taken her out more than once.
Rafe parked the bike behind a cop car and an ambulance and stood there on the sidewalk, uncertain. Why was an ambulance here? Cooper and a man who probably was a detective of some kind both stood at the top of the flight of stairs, staring at him. “Uncle Rafe,” Raine was saying. Over and over again.

He drew a deep breath and looked down at her. “What is it?” “Are they going to take me to jail? Are they mad at me?” He smiled. Mad would come later…”No, they aren’t mad. But remember what I told you on the way here. Go on. Go see your daddy.”

Rafe slowly followed her, trying to let them have a moment. Cooper released his daughter from what was undoubtedly the biggest hug she’d ever received, turned and glared at him. “Rafe,” Cooper said flatly, his eyes narrowed in anger. “Why am I not surprised. Rayne, go inside the house. Now.”

The child never did do what she was told, and she didn’t now. “No Daddy, don’t be mad at Uncle Rafe. He got me when I was lost. And I rode on his bike and I didn’t fall off.”

Distracted, his attention torn between his daughter and the ambulance, Cooper hesitated, looked down, then came right back, visibly shaken but obviously enraged. Jumping to the wrong conclusion, Rafe knew, although this one looked bad. He couldn’t blame the man this time. “What the hell is going on? Has she been with you all this time?”

Rafe shook his head, shifted his weight, watching the man behind Cooper and fully expecting to be arrested no matter what Rayne said. “I found her less than an hour ago. I have kids of my own – no matter what I think of you, I wouldn’t keep your daughter away from you. Whatever’s going on here, and that’s between you and Beth, something scared her. Maybe you’d better take some time to deal with that. If you can fit it in.”

For a long, nerve-racking moment Cooper said nothing. The man behind him called out his name, sharply. “Mr. Taylor.” Rafe ignored him, tried to ignore him. Finally, in a deep quiet voice, Cooper responded, “We need to talk. But not now. Beth’s in labor. I have to go.”

Rafe started back toward his bike. In labor….that meant she was early. Rayne’s little prank and Gabe’s incredible failure to recognize the child probably pushed that up, but he couldn’t help wondering if there was more. Whatever it was, he’d bet Cooper had something to do with it. If the man was home more than 5 days a year, what he could spare from his tours, he'd be surprised. “Rafe,” he heard Cooper call out. He briefly considered not responding, then reluctantly turned and looked back.

"Thank you."
Late Evening...

Exhausted, ecstatic, relieved. Cooper stood in his daughter’s bedroom, knowing he needed to grab a few hours sleep before making arrangements to go back to the hospital – twin boys, he still had trouble believing it – but he had yet to really talk to Rayne about what had happened. Dealing with her reasons for running away…he’d have to wait until he could think clearly to tackle that. But where she had been, no, he wanted to know the truth about that now.

She’d had been wandering around the house, uncharacteristically quiet, since they’d driven back from the hospital. But then it had to have been a long difficult night and day for her, too much for a little girl. “You’ve got two little brothers now Raindrop, Eric and Nathan. You’ll have to help mommy out with them. Both of us need to go to bed, but I want to talk to you for a couple of minutes.”

She looked up at him, and Cooper was hit with another wave of relief. He’d tried to hide his worst fears from Beth, probably not too successfully. The fact that she’d gone into early labor after 12 solid hours of panic about their daughter said something about how successful he’d been. “Rainie,” he said carefully, “I need to know where you really were. Were you with Rafe all this time?” “No Daddy, I wasn’t. I runned to the cat lady’s house. It was really cold.”

He had no idea what or where that was. A cat lady? “Yeah I bet it was cold. Is that someplace close by? You were there the whole time right? You need to tell me the truth about this.”

She shrugged. “She had lots of cats. But she wasn’t there and I didn’t see any cats. Then I got rescued. Uncle Rafe brought me home on his bike.”
Cooper drew a deep, weary breath. She was evading him. Or was she? He was too drained to think about it. “All right, tomorrow you can show me the cat lady’s house, before we bring mommy and your brothers home. Can you do that?”

The corners of her mouth dropped down. In a very small voice, Rayne asked, "Are you mad? I'm sorry. I was scared."

Then she abruptly smiled and added, "Can I get a cat?"

“We’re not mad. We were scared too. Right now you’re going to bed. We’ll talk about getting you a cat later.” Much later, Cooper thought dryly, imagining Beth’s reaction to adding a cat to the household on top of the twins.

“Get some sleep babygirl,” Cooper told her quietly, hugged her, turned off the light and half staggered down the hall to his own bed.

He had too much going on, but his family was safe, the most important thing, the only thing that really mattered. The rest of it, and there was definitely more left undone, he could deal with. If not tomorrow, then soon. Very soon.

“I told you. I didn’t tell. And I won’t forget. I won't ever forget.”

NEXT CHAPTER: South Beach Chapter 44

Awwwww!!! This was a really sweet chapter Beth. I can't imagine how Cooper and Beth were feeling having their child go missing. Not only to have a child go missing and be famous...there are A LOT of people that would have taken advantage of that! I'm glad she found her "prince" and he took care of her.
Also glad to see that Cooper didn't go off the deep end with Rafe. Hopefully things get cleared up between Beth and Coop. Especially with the added strain of twins! TWINS!! Haha!!
I loved how this ended. Lovely writing and great shots as always!
Thanks! I had a terrible time making this work even to the minor extent I ended up with.
Awwww.
I couldn't wait till later, lol!!!
There is definitely a lot that Cooper and Beth need to fix, they really need to have a long conversation, but now with the twins, I wonder if they would ever have time... I just hope they wont keep on postponing that talk, there's so much love involve in their relationship but they also have a lot of 'distrust' (not sure of the right word) but they need to talk to clear up all their questions...
Anyway, that last part was just so sweet... now I see what Mao said last chapter, something about Gabe had just ruined Rayne's life forever... lol
well I'm starting to believe he did indeed somehow ruined her life...
but oh well, a little girl needs a prince, and I hope that when she grows up Gabe wont be anywhere around... because we all know how Gabe is... and our little princess deserves way better than him! :D
I'm so glad Cooper did thank Rafe... I thought he would put him behind bars! :D
Wonderful update!!!
thank you S@ndy.
Gabe made a deep and lasting impression, but less as a man than a fantasy figure. Chasing a dream can be good or self-destructive. It certainly has some negative potential.
Your support means so much to me. Thank you for always taking the time.
This could have gone all kinds of ways, most of them bad for Rafe, but it looks like he got a reprieve. I'm sure Cooper won't let it go but the main thing is that his baby girl is home.
She really is something isn't she? Boy does she have her father wrapped around her little finger...I am constantly amazed at her expressions!
And so like a child to talk to the evening sky to her "prince" as if he could hear. That is so sweet and so touching.
Can I say I loved that close-up of Rafe? And all the other shots...
Really well done B.
Thank you Gayl. Could not have done it without you. I stalled on this so many times.
LOL yes Rayne certainly does have Cooper wrapped around her little finger! She worked that situation. And I think she has her father's expressive face - she shows her emotions.
I hated to drop that extra scene with Rafe. Will have to come back and make up for it.
Oh, Rayne, you little fibber, you! The cat lady, LOL. I loved her, "can I get a cat?" So cute and so like a kid to try and distract from the important parts!
Ahh, twin boys. Too bad all this chaos happened, no one can really sit back and enjoy it. Time to pick up the pieces. I wonder what Cooper and Beth will make of this?
I loved the shots in this one! Rayne is so cute.
LOL! The Cat Lady, and Rayne's sticking to her promise. That is one precocious, stubborn and intelligent little girl there. LOL!
Stunning writing, the roller coaster of emotions, the relief all of it and the stunning screens!!! Bravo! 80)
Mao, yes she surely did fib. And use what she had to throw dust in her father's eyes.
No idea where it will go from here. Back to Gayl...
thank you Cherie -- you pretty much nailed that child! Add devious to the list...
this was just another short piece to tie up things, so I really appreciate the compliments!
I'm so glad she's back home again! And relieved that Cooper didn't lose his head about Rafe bringing her back, I'm guessing that will come later! :D
Rayne is just so cute and full of life! I too adore that last shot with her talking to the stars as if her 'prince' can hear her!
I do wonder if the truth will ever come out though...
Emily, thank you. I think eventually the truth will come out, but not for years.
I've wrapped this up and don't plan on taking it any further -- I really had one goal in mind and that was to get her back home after I messed up and had her run away in the first place.
and thank you again so much
Gabe has a fan club now it seems, but I fear Rayne is now going to grow up expecting all men to be heroic and helpful to damsels in distress. Rafe got off lightly I think, there are some bonuses to having so many things happening for Cooper all at once.
Very good wrap-up of Rayne running away. I don't think it was a mistake, it fleshed out her character more, she showed grit and spunk and a touch of the devious in one so young.
Also gave Gabe some face-time, also showing a side of him we figured was there, but buried deep. I am sure it is buried once again, and may not peek out again until he sees a more grown-up Rayne, perhaps?
That must have stuck in Coop's craw to say 'thank-you' to Rafe.
Cat lady??? LOL!! Like I said, spunk.
That last shot was endearing..."I won't forget" And the thing is, I don't think she will.
Great subplot, I loved this. Hope you do more.
goodbye_sun, yes Rafe got off lightly. If Cooper hadn't had so many distractions, that would not have happened. As it is, he suspects something more went.
Rayne is definitely going to have some unusual ideas about men. If she had been an adult woman, Gabe would not have rescued her.
thank you for your continuing support -- it means a great deal to me.
Oh thank you Karen! A subplot instead of a tangent -- LOL! Whatever they are, there are too many of them running around. I'll do my best to clean them up without creating more in the process!
this particular little subplot surprised me. I didn't expect the interactions to go the way they did. If I can use anything here in the future without going seriously astray, I will.
Oh this was a subplot (and I'll prob never get the entire plot! ha ha) - it's cool - I do hope that child will start wearing some clothes though. It's a bit weird that she's always wandering around in her underwear :-)
yeah simstate, it's a subplot. That's all these pieces really are. The main plot is about Cooper and the band.
LOL! Just coincidence that she's shown wearing pj's throughout this piece.
thank you for reading!
Yep! I knew it! She isn't going to forget about him! He certainly has a way with females... even the young ones it seems! And did she just tell her daddy a fib? ...the cat lady??? LOL!
I'm glad Rafe didn't get into trouble when he brought her back home. I'm surprised that the police weren't crawling all over the place. I almost expected them jump out of the bushes and drag him off to jail! LOL!
Twin boys! My! So their family has grown again. Hopefully, Beth and Cooper work out their differences soon. They'll be needing each other's support to take care of their new young'ns.
Great writing! And the pictures were gorgeous! :D
Emily, thank you. Yes she told a fib LOL! Probably not the first and definitely not the last.
If this had been a main piece, I would probably have tried harder to get a bunch of people in police uniforms all hanging around. But it's not. So I didn't. (Hurray for minor pieces!) I don't think Cooper really believes Rafe kidnapped his daughter anyway.
Thank you so much for reading and for the compliments!
