Chapter 49 - South Beach - Packages Delivered

Downtown - North Metro

Gabe strapped up the boxes, hauled them down the stairs and out onto the sidewalk where he stood over them for a moment, mentally reviewing what he’d packed. This was everything. Documents. Contacts. Everything important.

He kneeled down and inspected the tape one more time; he’d run short and had been forced to skimp, but they looked all right. His last kiss, killer kiss, best damned kiss he'd ever delivered. Pretty damned fucking funny if you didn't look at it too closely. Whether his cousin was up to taking it further… nothing he could do about that.

He dumped them off in Chang’s along with the rest of the shit going out in the mail tomorrow, mixing them up, and headed down the sidewalk toward the rear of the building. The back entrance was safer. Should he have sent them? The man had a family and that bitch had a mean bite. She bit him first, Gabe reminded himself, and he can bite back. If anyone in the family could do it, would do it, it would be his cousin. May as well try to take her down; he had never wasted opportunities, and there was no reason to start now.

The alley behind the restaurant was narrow and dimly lit but so far it had been safe. Rounding the corner, thinking about his next move, whether he should get out tonight or if he could wait until tomorrow morning, Gabe looked past the line of trashcans and saw him. No, tomorrow morning was going to be too late. From behind the broken palette, he said smoothly, “Hello, Gabe.”

Gabe glanced at the dumpster. He would probably be occupying it in the next few minutes, but he took a long look at the man, recognizing him. They'd outsourced the problem. This one wasn't local. And might not know what he was dealing with - always a chance to pull it out and he wasn't giving up. He had an advantage here, already saw it. He strode casually past the dumpster, boots crunching on broken glass, shifted his weight to his right leg, and smiled. “Took you long enough – good thing I waited up for you.”

University – Stanfield and Mitchell Residence

Rafe waited a week after he got the call from Jason Mitchell, a call he didn’t understand and had been inclined to ignore. He was busy; Marc was Tony’s problem, not his; and nothing about the situation seemed urgent. Only a distant and uneasy memory finally got him out there. This time he drove Gayl’s car – if he did end up taking Marc somewhere, he wasn’t going to attempt to do it with his bike.

Big place, he thought idly, strolling past three levels of dark stone and glass. He could see guitars and amps lying around a room on the second floor and wondered if Stanfield would build his kid a stage and an arena if he wanted one.

Jason and Jett Mitchell were waiting for him next to the front door, and before he had a chance to even ask what was going on, they started in on him. Both of them. At the same time. “Thanks for coming,” Jett began, “you know something’s wrong with your brother. Man something is seriously wrong with him.” “You need to do something about Marc,” Jason interrupted. “My girlfriend can’t go out of the damned house! He’s fucking crazy! He’s dangerous!”

Eying both of them, silent, Rafe wondered whether this was really about some girl they both wanted. If they’d dragged him all the way out here to get in the middle of something like that… “I don’t want to talk about it out here,” he told them flatly. “You can explain inside.”

They both got quiet immediately, opened the door and trailed after him down a short foyer and into a wide living area overlooking a park to the rear. More guitars, Rafe noted, and, staring at two girls on the sofa, his cousin Kestral. This was the girlfriend? Jason had flown her out for that last Mercury Rising performance, so it made sense. Uneasy, he started to remember Marc’s strange phone call about Kestral and her brother. Maybe there was something wrong.

Cooper’s sister Ericca leaped off the couch and started right into it. “Marc got sacked 10 times last week and 6 times the week before! He has a concussion! He’s not dangerous!” Rafe tried to tune her out, turning to Kestral. “Kes, can you tell me what’s going on?” “Have you seen his place?” Jett challenged, standing behind him but evidently talking to Ericca. “He’s got everything going but the tinfoil hat!”

Jason stepped past Kestral, who so far hadn’t said a word, and got up next to Ericca. “A concussion? There’s more going on than a concussion and you know it! You shouldn’t be hanging out there with that guy by yourself, E!” “Yeah, he might think you want to eat his brain,” Jett added. Frustrated, Rafe tried again. “Kes?” She cast an unhappy look at Ericca and in a very quiet voice responded, “Maybe it is a concussion, but something is wrong. He acts like he’s scared.”

“He’s not scared!” Ericca insisted. “He got hurt and he didn’t take care of himself!” “Then let Rafe take care of him!” Jason shouted. “Yeah,” Jett chimed in. “Before he goes after someone who takes care of the problem for him.” Kestral didn’t say another word.

“All right,” Rafe broke in, wondering how they ever managed to solve anything. “I’ll go talk to him.”

Relieved just to get out of there, Rafe walked with Jason down to the curb. Wyatt strolled up, nodded briefly as he walked by. Rafe looked at him but his attention was focused now. Out of the lot of them, Jason was the one Rafe trusted to use some damned common sense.

“He’s really that bad?” he asked. “He really is,” Jason assured him quietly. “Go find out for yourself.”

University – Marc’s Residence

As soon as Rafe pulled up at Marc’s rental and carefully walked through unlocked doors, calling his name, he saw it. The furniture was gone. An old TV aerial in the foyer and a ladder...a ladder? What the hell? “Marc?” he called out.

The smell caught him by the throat. Trash. And more than trash. Was that urine he smelled? The old memory pressed him harder.

“Marc?” he repeated uneasily. His brother was stretched out on an old sofa staring intently at a TV with no picture.

When Marc still didn’t respond, Rafe planted himself between his brother and the TV, stared down at him intently and demanded, “Look at me! What the hell is going on?”

Marc stirred and struggled to sit up. Rafe had anticipated too much alcohol, partying gone too far, something he could easily deal with. Not this. He tried to breathe through his mouth to avoid the stench, not successfully, and wondered how Cooper Stanfield’s sister had forced herself to even walk into this pit. “Rafe?” Marc responded. “How did you get here?”

Jesus, Rafe thought, horrified. He dragged his hand through his hair – what was he supposed to do with this? “In a car, Marc. Come on, talk to me. What’s going on?”

His brother got to his feet. Standing in the light, he looked even worse. Deep shadows under his eyes, and he smelled like he hadn’t showered in a week. “Do you hear that?” Marc looked over his shoulder back toward the front door. “I put something over there to keep them out, but they still get in.”

The crash. Rafe turned away, overwhelmed with the memory. He’d fallen hard, so hard and so fast and so far he would not have made it if Gayl hadn’t hauled him out, hallucinations, everything, but it had been his mother haunting him, not things he could have blocked out with an old TV aerial. The smell. It was the same smell. It rose up in his throat and stung his eyes. “Don’t you hear them?” Marc shouted.

He drew a deep, shaking breath, turned and gripped Marc’s shoulders firmly. “I’ve heard them, Marc. But I don’t anymore. We’re getting out of here. I’m taking you away from this.”

Marc searched his face, and he seemed calmer. Maybe the acknowledgement that whatever was after him, he wasn’t alone with it. “Where are we going?”

“Home,” Rafe told him gently. “We’re going home.”

Bay View – Tony’s residence

“You should have called me. You never did let me help you. But thanks for bringing him here, Rafe. I’ll get him away from here for a while and get some help for him.”

Rafe stood outside his father’s house in Bay View, breathing in the scent of grass and Oleander, the sunlight warm on his bare arms. He hadn’t spoken to Tony in a long time, although he knew his father had been over to the house to see Nic and Randi, just not when he was there. Maybe it was time to give all that up. “I know I didn’t,” he admitted. “And this is the right place for him. He needs the help. I needed it.”

Rafe looked past Tony at Marc, who was walking into the house with MJ. MJ?

“MJ’s here?” he remarked. It was sure no secret that MJ had hung in there, always, through two wives and the whole deal with Beth and she was still here. Still Tony’s girl. Looking pretty good too.

“People do change,” Tony replied obliquely, watching his son and the tall redhead enter the house. “Or change their minds.”

“Yeah…she never changed hers though.” He smiled. “Good luck with that. You deserve it, Dad. A little luck.”

Bay View – Taylor Residence

“How is he?” Gayl asked softly.

Rafe sighed. “Not good. It brought back…bad memories I guess. I got him out of there and took him to Tony. He’ll take care of him. My father’s good at that if you give him a chance.”

“Some packages arrived for you today,” she told him as they walked into the house. “I didn’t recognize the return address.”

He wanted a shower and some time alone with her, but that was strange. “I didn’t order anything. Maybe it’s a mistake.”

Rafe gave the boxes a cursory glance, then froze. The return address; he didn’t even read the return address. He didn’t have to. Scrawled across what was undoubtedly a bogus address was a set of familiar initials written in a long, bold hand in heavy black ink. GL.

Gabe.

I don’t think I need to tell you how much I loved this since I pushed, pushed and pushed some more for you to do it. I was amazed at how chaotic that conversation was at university. The impression of everyone talking at once, with their own agenda, defending, accusing, imploring, protecting; it was very well done, very effective!

I choked up as Rafe’s distant memories slowly overtook him. I felt such terrible pain as he reassured Marc that he “heard them too”. He has grown so much; he is so strong now. It took awhile to get past all the emotions that welled up. Poor Marc and OMG he looked so sad and pathetic and I mean that in the kindest way. He has sunk to some terrible dark place.

Good to see Rafe let go of the past and settle things within him regarding his father. It looks like Tony has reconciled and let go of a lot as well.

What can I say about Gabe? Gambling to the very end isn’t he? He has never been a particular favorite of mine but I felt some real sadness at his situation.

Extremely emotional piece; compelling and so sad.

...and thank you...

This piece goes back a long long way. And no, I didn't want to do it. But hell, it was set in motion a long time ago so it was time to deal with it.

so thank you for pushing me!

Tony and MJ: you know I do not write romantic scenarios, and never intended to let them have a happy ever after. Sit tight long enough and maybe you'll get the promotion LOL.

Gabe will definitely gamble to the bitter end.

thank you too

Oh goodness! I wonder what's in the packages?! Poor Rafe...all those memories!

Marc looked horrible! Exactly as you described him!

There was a lot of old emotional baggage getting dumped in this piece! Wonderful!

S.B. said...

Thanks Phoenix.

The boxes contain Rafe's mother's downfall. Gabe's final revenge. If he didn't know he was going down, he wouldn't have let anyone else have the satisfaction.

Phoenix said...

Ohhhh....wow!!! Thanks for letting me know! See, I was feeling kinda bad for Gabe because of Cammie and this whole situation but now...

That man is like a coin. You never know which side you're going to get when you flip it!

But I still like him for some strange reason!

S.B. said...

Phoenix, Gabe is unlikely to live through this. He's a dead duck. He knows it. He'll take down whoever he can on his way out.

I like him too. He's the reluctant hero. Not a good guy. Not at all. But once in a while, he comes through. He is like a coin, you are right. Flip it, you get cold ass. Flip it again, you get someone who sacrifices his own interests for someone else.

Eden's downfall, you say! Wow! Now that's really something... leave it to Gabe to turn up something like that!

I am glad to see Rafe and Tony making some amends with each other. And MJ is still hanging around? Remarkable! She certainly has been persistant. Maybe she'll finally get lucky and keep her man. LOL!

That was truly distressing to see Marc in such a state. He really did need help badly. I am glad that his brother took the time to check on him and take him home. The poor guy!

S.B. said...

Gabe has had something on Eden for a long time, but he wasn't sufficiently motivated to do anything about it. Distracted with his own problems.

MJ never gave up. She gets a gold star for persistence, and probably the man she's loved all this time. As long as she's ok knowing she isn't his first choice. Or second choice.

Rafe didn't want to get involved in a problem with Marc, mostly because he didn't believe it was serious. But he did it. And given his own history, he wouldn't leave his brother there in that condition.

Thank you so much for sticking with me!

Its so very Gabe to make sure he goes out with a bit of a bang, I get the feeling whatever he sent to Rafe is going to help to wash away some of the not so brilliant things he might have done over the years.

I have to wonder how long Marc would have been like that had Jason and Jett not called Rafe, Ericca was definitly not seeing how bad he had gotten.

WOW!This chapter was hard to read.. poor Mark... my goodness, and is Gabe gone?!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO I will go put on my black mourning outfit! :(
(I love that Gabe kept his coolness till the end!!!) lol Took you long enough – good thing I waited up for you.” Great Line!!!

You know I always like MJ I'm glad Tony gave her a chance, I'm really happy for her... I always liked her... lol

I wonder what is in the package... if it is to bring down Eden, then I really hope Rafe make use of whatever it is soon!!! :D she needs to fall hard and fast!!!
Wonderful chapter SB!!!

S.B. said...

Goodbye_sun, Gabe will go out with a bang. He'll take down whatever and whoever he can on his way out.

Jason has a good head on his shoulders. Ericca is in denial.

thank you. again. for sticking with me for so long.

S.B. said...

Gabe. Hard to believe anyone could take him down. The universe taking revenge on Gabe LOL!

But Gabe's last kiss is truly poison.

MJ will get her man. She's put in enough time. Let her have him. Sometimes the one you think you want is not the one you need.

"Sometimes the one you think you want is not the one you need."
Powerful line!!!! very true too... and painful as hell!!!

Oh, wow! I'm sorry it took me so long to get to this, Beth, but wow. I am not going to make any assumptions, as you are always full of surprises, but I am definitely in awe.

I loved the sort of parallel between Marc and Rafe. I love that it ended in them going back home. And seeing Tony again! It's been awhile. Haha, and there's MJ. She's determined.

I am sort of at a loss of actual words, or I'd say more. Very awesome, Beth! I'm not a fan of Gabe, but I loved this. He always has the interesting little tidbits... makes you think. Doubt. Wonder.

S.B. said...

Hey Mao!

Well you know I'm not a member of the Gabe fan club haha! But he always comes through for me.

It took me a long time to come up with a way to do this. I knew where I wanted to go, but getting there...had to sit and wait for it.

LOL no I don't think it's safe to make too many assumptions at this point!

thank you so much! I'm so glad you think it worked!

Emily said...

Ha ha, well okay, I won't make any assumptions either!

Of course Gabe is going to go out with a bang, he wouldn't have it any other way! If you do make him show that chivalrous side before he leaves, I may not be able to take it! *will sob my little eyes out for dear Gabe!* Make him be the bastard til the very end! LOL.

I hope what he sent Rafe however isn't going to just cause more grief and trouble. But it probably will considering who it came from.

Poor Marc, he looked really horrible in those shots! Glad Rafe decided to help him out but really I didn't expect much else from him, he has a good heart.

Oh Tony, you are getting old! I noticed those wrinkles! :D
I always liked poor, confused, never get a break, Tony. Maybe this time...

*Sigh* I feel like I've been down memory lane and it's sad to see some of these guys go. I feel like it's going to come to an end and I don't want it to end!

S.B. said...

Gabe will never leave any stage without making sure the spotlight is firmly focused on him LOL. And by sending Rafe what he did, he wasn't acting entirely, or even mostly, out of self interest. So it's not exactly chivalry, but at least he's not being a total bastard!

It's been interesting to me to go back and work with some of the characters I'd set aside. Not all of them are leaving. Rafe will stick around. Gabe isn't necessarily gone for good. Tony is finally showing signs of middle age. Still handsome, but not in his first youth anymore.

but I did want to wrap up old loose threads and make sure they were someplace I felt good about.

It is tremendously satisfying to know that these characters came across to someone other than me! Thank you so much Emily!

Very succint, to the point and enthralling. Gabe with his last act of defiance, and the faint showing of his heart. 80)

WOW Marc really does look horrid! Certainly lost himself there didnt he. Love the twins reactions and Rafe's thought about how they ever get anything solved. I was wondering the same thing, lol!. And I am really starting to wonder about ericca, she just seems so dazed and confused. Just a concussion... 80)

Tony looks good older and MJ is in the picture now, is it possible she finally got what she wanted in life? 80)

This was a stunning update, and wonderful tie up to a few loose ends. I do have to admit I am going to miss seeing Gabes on again off again heroic self. 80) I actually almost want to cry.

S.B. said...

Cherie - thanks. Gabe's kind of hard to get rid of. But he's not invulnerable.

Ericca is being protective and defensive but she's not clueless about Marc.

I think MJ is finally going to get what she wants. I dislike some things about her, but she is sure loyal to Tony.

Veron said...

Sorry I'm days late! Wow! You did a really good job with this. Rafe's encounter with Marc was eye-opening, and so sad.

I am tweaking out a little over the packages. That scene in the beginning left me hanging on to my nerves and then to realize that he had sent something to Rafe...

I know I'm not supposed to like him, but Gabe is always the alternative dynamic, and I so enjoy that.

Oh cliffhangers... why do you forsake me...

S.B. said...

Veron -- yes. Gabe, no matter how much you are not supposed to like him, is always the alternative dynamic. The one who makes it happen. The spark.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

I really felt for Marc here, and Rafe, the knight in shining armour, riding in again to clean up his family's messes.
Good wrap up of some character's stories, truly emotional. Nice to see one last glimpse of Tony (I am assuming)
And Gabe DID sent everything, LOL!

And he is a cool cucumber.
Great piece all around, shots, writing, just wonderful.

S.B. said...

thank you Drew - yes, that's a last glimpse of Tony unless something happens that I don't foresee.

The storyline here is beginning to veer into Sessions; not quite sure how I'm going to handle that.
